INSECT-FREE FOOD CERTIFICATION
Our professionalism and transparency at your service
We believe in a healthy and varied diet, but not so varied that it includes insects! When we understood that politics is aiming to increasing the number of insects for human consumption, we felt the urgency of creating a certification to protect our food, the companies that produce it and the consumers who buy it.
We are a new growing company, committed to protecting our gastronomic tradition and our nutritional health.
As the first insect-free food certifiers in the world, we offer you a high-quality service tailored on your needs.
“Insect-free food” Certification Standards
In order for a product to be approved for the Insect-free food Certification, it must not contain insects or insects’ parts among the ingredients.
Products that contain red-dye carmine (cochineal bug), shellac (E904), insect-derived L-cysteine are not eligible for the Certification and will be rejected.
In addition, companies must be approved after declaring that production cycles take place in a clean environment with sanitized equipment to minimize cross-contamination, if same machinery and locations are shared in a facility where food with insects is made.
Certification fees
To apply there is a one-time $35 non-refundable registration fee.
We ask for either an annual licensing fee or a three-year fee based on a single product.
The registration fee is due before the use of the “Insect-free food” logo on the product is permitted.
The fee contributes to support the Insect-free food Certification campaign worldwide.
We also certify restaurants, food trucks, chefs, food bloggers for which specific fees apply, which are in the “Certifications for job categories” section.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How do I get certified?
Submit an application through our online form
What is the time frame for completing the Certification?
It depends on the amount of products being certified and on the time it takes for the ingredients check. We usually complete the process in one week.
Why do you accept products that are manufactured on shared machinery?
We allow companies to use shared machinery (machinery that runs products with insects or insects’ parts) in the production of their products, as long as companies provide evidence of the measures taken to thoroughly clean machinery.
We believe that our Certification should make it easier for producers who are committed to keeping insects out of their ingredients, even if they have to share machinery or rent it.
What are some common ingredients that may be insect-derived, insect-based, and found in products?
Products that contain red-dye carmine (cochineal bug), shellac (E904), insect-derived L-cysteine are not eligible for the Certification and will be rejected.
